Here is the 1984 Supra that I recently acquired. It's a blast from the past for me, since I have previously had an 85 in the same color and an 83 which was my first car long ago. I'll be keeping a log of maintenance and upgrades that I have done. The car was purchased with 197,xxx miles on it so it has lots to do on it.
| Thorley Header 1/20/03 I am hoping to have the exhaust system re-done this weekend. I have a used Thorley header that I will install. Plans are to upgrade the exhaust sizing from standard 5MGE 2.25" to a full 2.5" from the header back. To achieve this I will be using the 7MGE extension on the Thorley header which is a full 2.5" at the collector piece. To remain legal I am putting on a 7MGTE Turbo Cat from my other Supra. I figure it must flow a little better than our old one and it opens my options up to bolt on test pipes and high flow cats in the future. Finally I will use 2.5" piping from a new flange to the rear muffler. The plan is to first use typical crush bent 2.5" piping and a Magnaflow muffler I have laying around. That is "Stage 2". The final stage would be 2.5" Mandrel Piping and a higher flow muffler. I don't have time for the planning of that quite yet. |
Cam Seal Replacement 12/17/03Replaced Cam Seal with Autozone parts. Here is where I would suggest that you always get Toyota parts. You just can't feel comfortable with aftermarket parts. Luckily everything went smoothly. I replaced the 2 cam seals and the gasket behind the timing cover for $13.99 plus the cost of some copper gasket spray and some brake parts cleaner. So far after about 20 miles there is not sign of a leak, but I am still keeping my fingers crossed. |
| Disaster on the highway 12/10/03 A smokescreen prevented a happy trip up north. I found myself with dropping oil pressure and having to add oil to combat the problem. I went throught 8 Quarts of oil on a single trip. When I got home I found the intake side cam seal popped out and dangling behind the timing gear.

First Long Drive 12/10/03 8 Gallons of gas was all it took to do a 200 Mile round trip to Cerritos. I can only think that the ignition system really made the difference there. The multiple spark system must be doing it's job. It was a smooth trip but there were some problems as you will see.

| Failed Stereo Replacement 12/8/03 I went to remove the stereo in hopes of placing a new Pioneer CD player with was happily wired into a Toyota stereo adapter for the stock harness. This is what I had in my MK3. Unfortunately for me I did not know the 84 was different. There is another Toyota harness which is rarely found in stock at any shops for the older 82-85 models. Luckily I found one on ebay for $10. I'll have an update when it comes in. |
The purchase 11/20/03 I traded this car for my previous 1988 Celica All Trac. Having so many All Tracs already, I figured it was a nice change of pace to have something else and an Automatic car which would be great for taking long trips. This is a blue? 1984 Supra P Type with 197,000 Miles. It has the Auto Transmission, blue cloth interior and most things are original down to the factory stereo. The plus on this car is a factory rebuilt engine at 181,000 miles. Unlike the usual grimy 5M-GE engine, this one is a beauty. Unfortunately I do not have pictures to do it justice.
